Fedor 2.0

I was wondering today while watching some old Pride events, is there any heavyweight that can be as successful as Fedor was back in his prime. I mean, dude was just ripping through heavyweight division. Before the Fall of Fedor started, he was 31-1, with his only losses being due to doctor stoppage. In the mean time he beat such names as Herring, Cro Cop, Nogueira, Coleman, Randleman, Hunt, Sylvia, Arlovski... Yeah maybe those names aren't such impressive right now, but men, back in the day those were all fucking warriors.

So, who can replace Fedor?

Many people said that Cain Velazquez is the new Fedor. But let's review his record, shall we? In his first UFC fight he beat Brad Morris - natural light heavyweight who fought in UFC only twice, lost both times, then got cut. Next Velazquez faced off with Jake O'Brien. Back then actually O'Brien was considered a dangerous opponent, and I think the whole Cain-hype-train thingy started after this fight, especially considering Jake's padded record (10-1 coming into Cain fight). But in my opinion, O'Brien was also hype only. He doesn't have one single decent win on his record. I guess I would say Herring, but that was at the end of Heath's career, so thats not gonna count. Who faced Cain then? The great Denis Stojnic. Yeah, thats the guy who got TKO'd by Cain, then Struve RNC'd him, and that was it for Stojnic, UFC released him from the roster. Who's next for Mr. Velazquez? Oh yes, Kongo. That win looks perfect on paper, up and coming guy defeats UFC veteran, 30-27, bla bla bla. But if you watch that fight, what you are gonna see?

Im not saying Cain have a glass jaw, its just his boxing style is not really what you call orthodox, and from that point I knew that if he is gonna face a good technical striker, he is gonna get KO'd. Then, he fought past-prime Big Nog, and yeah he knocked him out pretty fancy, but still, its not like Big Nog is some wicked technical striker, and he looked really fucking slow. Next up for Cain - Brock Lesnar. That fight proved almost nothing besides that Cains MMA wrestling > Brock MMA wrestling. We all knew coming into that fight that Cain will destroy Brock's ugly face on the feet, so that fight just proved that Cain have good wrestling. But didn't we all knew it from the beginning? And then his first title defense came up, against Junior Dos Santos. Many people say it was lucky punch, but I think those dudes are crazy. It wasn't a lucky punch, it was just pure technique from Junior.

 

Now he is up against Bigfoot Silva, but im gonna preview that fight in another post. So I guess that's it, at the beginning I thought that in this post I'm gonna compare HW prospects, but I guess explaining how Cain's hype-train got derailed was fun also.

UFC on Fox: Diaz vs. Miller

This event happened this saturday, May 5th 2012. It was third UFC event on FOX, and the card was pretty stacked with such names as always entertaining Nick Diaz, brazilian jiu-jitsu beast Rousimar Palhares, Pat Barry, Josh Koscheck, and two TUF winners - Tony Ferguson and John Dodson!

They streamed first two fights on facebook. I watched them both, Massenzio vs Vemola and Delorme vs Denis. First one isn't worth mentioning so I won't talk about that fight, but men Delorme and Denis put on a hell of a show!

That bout happened at bentamweight. I knew Denis from his previous fight, he KO'd his opponent in the clinch with elbows, thought that was pretty cool so I remembered him and I was heavily expecting that fight. Delorme in the other hand I knew from "The Ultimate Fighter". He lost to TJ Dillashaw in the semi-final by basically being wrestlefucked. So, back to the fight, both guys came out swinging, rocked eachother pretty early but it was Delorme who came out victorious by submitting Denis with one second left in the first round! That was an awesome fight. Oh and also, why the fuck Rogan kept mispronouncing Denis last name? He kept calling him Danny. Come on Joe.

Then came the Fuel TV prelims, which I was able to watch on ufc.tv for free since I am from Europe. How cool is that?! Thanks Dana. First two fights were not really that exciting, actually I felt asleep in the middle of Castillo fight (fun-fact, Goldie thinks its pronounced Cat-Steel-o for some weird reason).

Then out of nowhere, fight of the night was next! I mean, literally because uncle Dana gave FOTN bonus (65,000$) to those two fighters. I am talking about Louis Gaudinot and John Lineker. I think everyone (including me) was expecting Lineker to destroy green-haired Gaudinot. I mean, it was Linekers 25th fight compared to Gaudinots 8th. At the beginning John was coming out stronger in the exchanges. In the second round we discovered that Louis have some wrassling brah! He was landing some vicious ground and pound, and then ended the fight by guillotine with 6 seconds left in second round! Nice one Louis!

 

I haven't watched Hathaway vs Krauss because I saw some of the fights from Hathaway and, well, they were boring. Dodson vs Elliot was a fun fight, remind me of old, good, Tekken 3. Seriously. Those dudes were in the air for half of the fight. Okey maybe not, but it was still a cool fight, and Dodson won by unanimous decision. In the next fight, heavily hyped Ferguson was against GSP first pick in TUF 12, Michael Johnson. I was also wrong predicting that fight, I thought Ferguson is gonna turn Johnson's lights early in the fight, but it didn't happened. Johnson was quicker on the feet, and was landing more significant shots. Johnson won the fight by unanimous decision.

Now, main card. If you are following UFC, and you do not know who Pat Barry is... seriously, bro, what's wrong with you? That guy is the most exciting fighter in heavyweight division. He was up against heavy handed strikeforce veteran Lavar Johnson (17-5, 15 KO's). Early in the fight Pat managed to get a full mount, and even tried for an americana! It looked pretty closed to be over, but Lavar weather the storm, and knocked Barry out 4 minutes 38 seconds in the first round. I like Barry so I was pretty disappointed, but I think he gassed himself out with that americana attempt, because he was visibly tired when they got back up to their feet.

Next fight, Alan "My tattoo is terrible" Belcher was up against Rousimar Palhares, or - as Goldie and half of the sherdog community call him - Paul Harris. Well anyway, Palhares landed a powerful takedown early in the fight, and everyone was pretty sure that the fight is over. Why? Because Palhares have awesome leg-locks. Out of his 14 wins, 10 of them came by the way of submission, and 8 of them were leg-locks. He caught a feet of Alan and I was like "okey, its over". But I was wrong. Who knew that Belcher is a black belt? I didn't. And pretty fucking solid black belt may I say! Not only he defended that leg-lock perfectly, but he stayed in Palhares guard (while Rogan was screaming "GET OUT OF THERE ALAN!") and stopped him with some vicious elbows! Nice ground and pound bro. Spider would still demolish your white ass though.

I haven't watched Hendricks vs Koscheck because I felt asleep, again, at the commercials. I woke up in the middle of the third round, so I am gonna skip that fight. Hendricks won a split decision, and sherdog community says that it was robbery. That's it.

Now. Main event of the evening. Nate Diaz was up against Jim Miller. If I would have to bet, I would bet on Miller, but I was rooting heavily for Nate, since he is awesome. First round was pretty even, a lot of clinching, I haven't saw the scorecards from that event yet, but I think Nate got that one. Then, second round began and so did the end for Jim. Nate was starting to land some solid combinations, stuffed a couple of takedowns, finally rocked Jim with 1-2 punch combination and choked him out with a guillotine. I have to say, Nate was looking pretty solid but I don't see him beating Benson or Frankie. I would like to see him against winner of Guida/Maynard fight, to test his wrestling a bit more. Oh, after Nate won he started to yell straight at the camera "WHAT, WHAT, WHAT BITCH!". I am sure FOX loved that.

So, what did we learnt from this event? Few things. First of all, flyweights are really exciting, Barry need to stick to his striking, Belcher might be the new big thing in middleweight, and, last but not the least, we may have two champs with the same last name some day in the future...
